Coast Starlight
Amtrak's most scenic long-distance train — 35 hours along the Pacific coast from Los Angeles to Seattle, past beaches, volcanoes, vineyards and ancient redwood forests.
America's Pacific Rail Journey
18-19 Miya-cho
Kawaguchi City, Saitama 332-0028, Japan
North of Santa Barbara, the route moves inland through the agricultural Central Valley of California, then climbs into the dramatic Cascades of Oregon and Washington. Mount Shasta, Mount Hood and Mount Rainier all make appearances — snow-capped volcanic peaks rising above dense conifer forests.
The train is famous for its Parlour Car (1st class passengers only in northern states) — a lounge car unique to the Coast Starlight with panoramic seating, a wine bar, and evening activities.

Practical Tips
Best experience: Book a Superliner Roomette for the 35-hour journey — meals included and a private berth for sleeping. Day coach is fine for shorter segments.
Best views: The Pacific Ocean sections are best in afternoon, departing LA. Sit on the west side (ocean-facing) from LA.
Passes: Amtrak USA Rail Pass covers the Coast Starlight with a seat reservation. Point-to-point tickets are often competitive — compare both.
San Francisco connection: No station in SF — disembark at Emeryville and take the connecting Amtrak bus to San Francisco Transbay.
