Rail Pass FAQs

Are rail passes always worth it?
Not always. For very focused trips with few journeys, point-to-point tickets can be cheaper. Passes offer best value for multi-country travel with 5+ long journeys in a short period.
Do I still need seat reservations?
Yes, on many high-speed and scenic services even with a pass. Reservations are mandatory on TGV, Eurostar, Thalys, most Shinkansen and all scenic panoramic trains.
Can I buy a rail pass after arrival?
Eurail passes can be bought anywhere. However, JR Pass and BritRail must be purchased before you arrive in Japan or the UK respectively — often at a lower price through Engine Fix Supply partners.
What classes are available?
Most passes offer 1st and 2nd class options. 1st class gives access to quieter carriages, wider seats and on some routes lounge access. Worth it on longer journeys.
